Andros

Greece | tourist holiday travel guide to Andros

Andros or Hora, as it is locally called, is the capital of the island and, beyond any challenge, the nicest town. The mid-ages style houses, the neo-classical and island-type ones, in addition to the narrow alleys, the museums and the beaches, are the main attractions for every visitor.

Close to Hora is Messaria, the medieval center of the island, with Taxiarchis Michail, an important Byzantine church built in 1158. Menites is an all-green village with lots of waters, gardens and big plane-trees. Stenies will impress you, since it is one of the most beautiful villages of the island having lovely mansions. Higher above lies Apikia, well-known thanks to Sariza natural spring and Pithara as well, an ecosystem of great natural beauty with lakes and waterfalls.

Make your holidays at Mykonos 4 days for only 376.00 € EUR

The southern part of the island is dominated by Ormos, a quiet picturesque village with a large beach. At close distance is Aidonia, with the tower-houses, Piso Meria, lovely Korthi, Kaparia, Alamania, Chones. Moving higher, towards the impressive Faneromeni Castle, we will find Piskopio, Lardia, Gianiseo Mesa and Exo Vouni and Kochylou. At the end of "Dipotamata" valley is situated Syneti.

PLACES OF INTEREST
The Monument of Inconspicuous Sailor shows the Naval Fights of the island, as well as its nautical progress.
In the Archaeological Museum are kept artifacts of the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Periods as well as signs and artifacts of the Ottoman Domination Period.
The ruins of the Venetian Castle which was constructed by Marinos Dandolos, are situated in the entry of the harbour.
The house and the statue of the philosopher Theofilos Kairis.
The Temple of Saint Peter in Paleopoli, is a monument of the Medieval Era. Its round tower is twenty meter high.
The Medieval Castle and the Spring of Sariza in which water is bottled for commercial purpose, in Apoikia.
The Monastery of Saint Nicolaos in Gavrio with ecclesiastical utensils and embroideries of great historical value.
The Modern Art Museum of Vassilis and Eliza Goulandris is also in Gavrio

The main resort town is Batsi on the western coast which is popular with Greek tourists.

The island is famous for its mineral springs at Apoikia where the water comes out of a lionhead.

Palaeopolis, the ancient capital is mostly underwater.

Stenies, on the island's eastern coast near the beaches of Yialia and Piso Yialia, is probably the island's most picturesque village. However, the east coast of the island is not famed for its welcoming attitude to tourists, and historically, steps have been made to stem the flow of visitors, that have altered the landscape of neighbouring islands (notably Mykonos). There are no commercial distractions in Stenies.
