Kefalonia

Greece | tourist holiday travel guide to Kefalonia

Kefalonia Greece is one of the most popular destinations of the Ionian Islands and the biggest island of the group. The Greek Island of Kefalonia has many wonderful beaches with fine sand and turquoise, bleach-like waters, specific to the island. Others of its many beauties are its picturesque villages, its National Park on its highest mountain (Mount Ainos) on which a rare specie of fir forest grows and terrific landscapes.

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and is a popular destination for tourists.  Located on the West coast of Greece, Kefalonia has a mild climate along with excellent beaches. The island has escaped mass tourism and recently was used to film Captain Corelli's Mandolin, set in war-time Kefalonia. The film, with Nikolas Cage, was a huge success and it put Kefalonia firmly on the 'must visit' destinations.

Kefalonia is a large island with diverse and dramatic scenery. The island has many wonderful bays and inlets which help to form its unusual shape. The northern rocky coastline has small and clean, pebble beaches whilst those on the southern shores are long and sandy. Kefalonia is  just waiting to be explored and with a good road network the island is ideal for driving.  For those who prefer a slower pace, Kefalonia is a great island for walking, cycling and horse-riding.  With the Greek islands of Lefkas, Zante and Ithaca  close by, you can take a ferry, motor-boat, or yacht to explore the Ionian shores.  Or maybe you just want to unwind? Kefalonia’s stunning beaches await.

The island is still largely unspoilt, and offers the visitor some of the most dramatic views in the Mediterranean. The variety of landscape is staggering: green valleys at Agios Gerasimos, fir-clad Mount Ainos, the rugged and craggy interior and the green hills of the north, covered with cypresses, broom, thyme and other aromatic shrubs and herbs. This is an island begging to be discovered. Explore a wealth of geological wonders, including subterranean Melissani Lake and the nearby Drogarati Caves. And of course, the island is famous for its stunning beaches, sandy in the south, and pebbly in the north, all with crystalline blue and green waters.

The Kefalonians like all Greeks, are generous, hospitable people. They are known for their intelligence and quick tempers; they are excellent traders; they are poets and writers of satire; they are shipping magnates. Many of them are seamen. They are a musical people and their love for singing and dancing is evident. Above all, they are great travellers. Their idiosyncratic character traits have made them the target of many jokes and anecdotes relating to their adventures.

In the past, a large percentage of the island’s population, like that of many other Mediterranean islands, could not find work and had to emigrate, seeking a better life elsewhere. They settled all over the world: the United States, Canada, Africa, Australia, and sent money back home to their families. They say that anywhere you go in the world, you are sure to find a Kefalonian!
