Lefkas
Greece | tourist holiday travel guide
to Lefkas
Lefkada is impressive even as it first greets the
visitor, as he crosses the narrow strip of dry land
and the 50-metre long floating bridge from the coast
of Aitoloakarnania. The bridge turns around on
itself allowing small boats to pass through the
canal of Lefkada. Gyra is one of Lefkada's most
important natural beauties. This narrow strip of
white sand, 7 kilometres long, which embraces the
lagoon on the north of the island, makes the
landscape quite special. Gyra begins from the point
almost behind the Kastro, creating Ammoglossa ('sand
tongue') and reaching as far as the other side,
beyond the town. Inside the lagoon is the 'ivari,'
where fish are bred in special, traditional wicker
baskets and grow within natural conditions.

Lefkada is the fourth biggest island of the
Ionian Sea. It is situated between Corfu and Cefalonia, very close to
the north-west coast of Aitoloakarnania, from which is separated with a
lagoon.
Lefkada ‘s geographic coordinates are 38-34 until 38-51 north latitude
and 20-34, 20-45 east lengh.
The north coast of Lefkada is the Cape of Santa Mavra and the south is
the Lefkatas Cape which is only five miles away from Cefalonia...
The tour around Lefkas
begins from the bridge of Lefkas which links the island with the greek
mainland (free of charge) and is considered to be the road connection of
the island.
A street above the sea level (1800m long ) leads to the town of Lefkas.
On the right hand there is the Lagoon of Lefkas with its famous beach of
Agios Ioannis and Gyra with its characteristic windmills.
On the left hand the sea path leads the ships to the eastern side when
the bridge rises.
On the eastern part of the town is the modern marina.
Marina can host up to 600 yachts and its building facilities include a
control tower, multi-purpose building, sailing club, office and retail
unit....
In the south-east of
Lefkada there is a green, deep gulf inside the cove of Sivota. The cove
closes the gulf and leaves a small entrance to the Ionian Sea. The boats
are naturally protected by the waves, the wind and the streams.
Inside the gulf we find the village of Sivota with its traditional
houses, the coffee shops, the fish taverns, the small café-bars along
the beautiful quay ( there is a bar inside an old oil factory).
The gulf of Sivota is a
true sailing paradise. In the summer sailing boats from all over the
world anchor in this calm gulf.
Lefkatas Cape or Cavo Dukato or the Lady ’s Cape or Nira (as the locals
call it). It is the biggest and the most south cape of the island , 5
miles away from Cefalonia. Homer mentions it in his work. In the
Antiquity human sacrifices were taking place on it. They would also
throw criminals for purification. ...
The town of Lefkada is 385
Km far away from Athens, 420 Km from Thessaloniki and 100 Km from
Igoumenitsa.
Lefkada has a bridge (free pass) that connects the island with the other
part of Greece,Aitolokarnania.
The Preveza-Aktio submerged tunnel makes access to the island easy from
Northwest Greece and the port of IgouEuropemenitsa
which is a major gateway to Wastern
and Central .
Opening of the Rio-Antirrio bridge will significantly improve
connections between
Lefkada and the rest of Greece and the port of Patra (170 Km) which is
the second major gateway to Europe...
